Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my country not in the list?

Probably because we are still a very small team and just beginning. We would be happy if you contact us directly.

If you want to help us even more and manage the petition for your whole country, that would be great!

Why should all these countries be any better than the US or China?

First of all: if you live in one of these countries, you would benefit from the investment directly, instead of having to buy foreign technology.

If you don't: we believe that credibly developing an AI that benefits all of humanity will be our biggest selling point, the factor that will make us attractive to investors, researchers, and workers.

We would not start this movement if we did not believe that we can help build an AI for everyone.

Which relationship do you want with the US or China?

The main goal of the movement is to push for investments in AI in our countries. We are not against the US or China.

We of course want to avoid the total dependence that is emerging today. However, we believe that a fair competition will be the best not only for us but also for the US and China. It would increase the market for top AI companies and facilitate an international collaboration if the situation requires it

We see plausible scenarios in the future where developing the right kind of AI requires international cooperation, and we want to keep this door well open.

We don't exclude investments in US or Chinese companies as part of our plan and we fully support these companies to open research, compute, or production facilities in our countries.

How can you make so many nations agree?

We believe the more we are, the better.

The European Union is the largest economy outside of the US and China. Other countries like Canada or the Nordic Countries have much cheaper energy prices, so they are ideal partners to host datacenters and infrastructure at lower cost, with clear direct benefit. Everyone can contribute to fund what is expected to be a very big investment.

International cooperation has advantages for all sides.

Also, we don't know yet where this movement will be more successful: we want to expand in as many countries as possible and then see where it worked and where it didn't.

Do you really believe we can be competitive?

Yes, we do. It will be hard, but we still have time.

Research in AI is still exceptionally open, with many open source models. The limiting factor is the absence of datacenters outside the US/China and the lack of funding.

We believe that a big ($100B-$300B+) public investment will be a strong sign that we are also in the race and will trigger a positive loop.

We also need to convince people that we are REALLY developing AI for all of humanity. This will attract investors, researchers, and workers, and will be a big selling point.

Is such big funding compliant with WTO rules?

There are many ways to make an investment compliant with WTO rules. For example, we can invest in research institutions like CERN, spread investments over multiple companies, etc.

The most important part is having the technology; the rest will follow.

How to collect a lot of signatures?

We think that the necessity of a big AI investment is a popular idea. To collect a lot of signatures, we need to reach as many people as possible.

Our movement will be very horizontal and open: everyone can help according to their possibilities. Share videos on social media, talk to friends, family and colleagues, write articles.

We encourage different views as long as everyone agrees on the necessity of a big and rapid AI investment. We don't want to impose a specific political view: we want a broad movement.

How do we get public support?

We WANT to build an AI that benefits all of humanity. We need to act on it. We need to be credible.

We need to find a way to be credible: maybe we can give a form of shares to every citizen? Or other forms of direct participation? We need to think about it, but in our view it is the key to success.

How do we make sure that we will create a good AI?

Given that we WANT to do this, this will depend on having a top team of researchers and engineers and a top direction. We can learn from other initiatives like CERN.

How can we fund such a big investment?

The EU is planning to invest 800B€ in the military. Not saying it is right or wrong, but there is the money to fund big projects.

We need to be attractive to private investors. A big public investment signals that we are in the race. Investments will come. AI companies are getting absurd valuations, there is no reason why investors would not invest here too.

Also, if we are credible in developing an AI for all of humanity, people will prefer to work and invest here.

How do we spend such a big investment?

We can spend it on datacenters, AI startups and research institutions, and people.

We could also consider favoring infrastructure investments by US or Chinese companies in our countries: being open to collaboration is important and reduces the risk of creating misaligned AIs.
